Martin Waldseemüller's world map was the first map to depict a separate Western hemisphere with the Pacific as a separate ocean. The map grew out of an ambitious project in Saint-Dié, Lorraine (in present-day France), during the early s, to document and update new geographic knowledge derived from the Portuguese and Spanish explorations of the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

Martin Waldseemüller (c. – 16 March ) was a German cartographer and humanist scholar. Sometimes known by the Latinized form of his name, work was influential among contemporary cartographers.

He and his collaborator, Matthias Ringmann, are credited with the first recorded Cosmographiæ introductio of Martin Waldseemüller in facsimile book of the word America to name a portion of the New World in honour of the Italian Alma mater: University of Freiburg.
